Atton couldn't avoid the apartment forever. He'd stretched his visit to Arrakis for two days, but that had been it. The last escape. Now, back to where it'd started. Ended? Wound up something in the middle.

The place got its death grip around his heart even before he entered the apartment, as he strolled past the door that had once been Sarah's. He stopped for a moment, just staring at it-- and then kept going.

Felt kind of like walking through a haunted house, honestly. Opening up the door? That held a certain amount of dread. He hadn't been back here since he'd-- well, okay, there'd been that time he'd come back to water the plants.

He opened the door.

Well. At least Pauline hadn't died yet.

He let out a soft sigh and locked the door behind him. Glanced down the hallway, to Sparkle's bedroom, and-- did he still have drinks in here? He had drinks in here. He slid into the kitchen and grabbed the whiskey from the shelf.

Some immeasurable stretch of time later, he was wandering from room to room, bottle in hand.

Bathroom. "Space, it hasn't looked this filthy in-- when?"

His bedroom. "Karkin'-- never mind."

Balcony. Living room. The walls held him upright.

You're pathetic, Rand. You always have been.

And... Sparkle's bedroom. With the window. A little layer of dust had settled on everything, but it looked stupidly untouched. Atton stared at it, the bed and the shelves and the-- he took a big swig from the bottle.

He'd brought Sparkle in here when the guy had been hurting, nearly broken, by all of that poodoo back home, and--

I don't know why you're so sentimental. Sparkle is only one of many that you failed to protect, after all. He glanced over his shoulder. The Witch wasn't as vivid as she had been, back on that planet. But she was still here. Kark it. Or perhaps all these rationalizations you've made up for what happened are foolishness, to cover the fact that you were replaced by something better. It wouldn't be the first time, would it? There is always something better.

"Shut up," he muttered, squeezing his eyes tight. He took another sip, and added, "I'm gonna... I'm gonna call Sia. She'll beat your stupid-- ugh, why am I even talking to you?"

He slumped against the doorway.

Then sank down, to the floor.

"Why am I even talking to you?" he muttered. Pulled up his phone. "I'm gonna... I'm gonna talk to Sia."
