"Well, bad news, your kitchen is screwed for the next two weeks," Atton said, closing the heavy door behind him. "That leak is no joke."
Jill sat at the bottom of the stairs, her hair even frizzier than usual. If he had to guess, Atton would say she'd been in bed already. She definitely felt more shaken than she let on, despite his best efforts to keep her ambient emotions out of his head.
"Bad news? Is there any good news?" she asked, clutching her mug tightly between her hands.
"Could be worse," Atton said, taking a few steps down, before he sank down onto the stairs beside her. "That fire could've gotten out of hand. You've still got power in the rest of the place. I managed a reroute so you're safe to use outlets anywhere else."
"Ah." That death grip loosened somewhat. "I-- thanks. For coming over and fixing it. I'm not sure I could've afforded a real guy." She looked up at him. "Uh, no offense."
"Still working towards that degree, so none taken," Atton said. He reached out - hesitantly - and patted her knee. "But it's fine. For now. You should probably have a pro come in to replace all that junk, though. I mean, I can do it for you, but no guarantees if I do." Earth tech was just enough like his tech that it wasn't too hard to wrap his mind around, but it was just different enough that he felt a little... iffy... on the whole thing.
"Thanks," Jill said again. For once, he didn't feel like complaining. Like maybe he was part of something, a community, and he'd done the right thing.
"How's your boyfriend?" he asked, because he didn't know what to do with that.
Jill snorted. "How's yours?"
"Funny."
She took a deep breath. "We're taking a break," she said finally.
"Great timing."
"Yeah."
